English as a Second Language: use of language development support and services to help students who come from a non-English language background learn English in a school setting.

Anyone who is a non-native speaker of English can enroll in ESL classes as long as that person is 18 years of age or older. Sometimes students with very good English skills want to enroll in these classes in order to polish their English. If you are at a level of proficiency where you only have minor errors in speaking or writing, you may not find these classes challenging enough.

BRAVERY WISDOM AND HONOR WITH PUSHBOT

The Pushbot will detect the figures and not bump into it or tip into the wall. The bot must push the figurine of Bravery, Wisdom and Honor on the black pressure plate without tipping the figures. Then the bot must find and locate the ramp and push the final figurine on black pressure plate across the ramp. This challenge has combination of many tasks. Calculating and executing the PUSH is a challenge as the speed component is very critical.

GET IT, GRAB IT AND GETOUT WITH GRABBERBOT

The grabberbot must run down a tunnel towards the scroll. The bot must stop before it touches the scroll or else it will destroy the scroll. The bot will have to remove the scroll without damaging or dropping it meanwhile should come in reverse.” This challenge revolves around the concepts of a robotic arm. Motion and grabber with other sensors makes this project very challenging.

SCROLL, KEY AND CAMERA WITH SNAPSHOTBOT

The Snapshotbot will move halfway into the library and turn left to face the books and scrolls. Completes certain task, takes a picture of library (Hypothetical) and leave the library until a sound indication is given.” Sensing color and sound will be key to this project. What makes this project more interesting is the way the robot moves with the inputs provided by sensors.

STRING, PEBLE AND GRAVITY WITH STRINGBOT

The stringBot must be able to move backwards and forwards on a tight String. Yes you read it correct, Tight String. The bot must also be able to hold a ball (which is our hypothetical pebble) and drop exactly at the containers entrance.” The student will not only have do some mathematics here but will also have to come up with solution where the robot is effective enough to carry itself on a string with a pebble.

TOMB, TRAP and TRIGGER WITH EXPLOREBOT

The Robot must go down a small tunnel (Hypothetical) about 10 feet and stop before it hits the wall. It then has to turn left and go about 6 feet and stop before it hits another wall. Find the path unless it hit the trigger and comes back safely.” These are just snap shots of what this project demands. The exciting model of ExploreBot and thrilling challenge will force a child to think logically and program the NXT accordingly.

Robotics Course of Intermediate Level for 13 - 15 year olds is available with us.  In Robo 2, students continue from Robo 1 and take up 5 more complex missions. The missions for this program are as follows:

• Mission 1: Analyze Chemicals in Fumaroles:  Move chemical sensors to and from boiling fumaroles to determine if dangerous vapors exist on the planet. Strange, possibly hazardous gases and chemical compounds have been noted around the fumaroles in the Fissure Plains. An earlier mission deployed a chemical sampling sensor into one of these fumaroles. Your Terrabot must travel to the fumaroles, deploy a ‘new’ sensor in one of the open fumaroles, and retrieve the sensor that is already in one of the fumaroles. Once the sensor has been lifted from the fumarole, it should be brought back to the Start Area. Robots must transport a sensor to the fumaroles. Once at the fumaroles, the robot must place the sensor into one of the open fumaroles. Next, remove the sensor that is already in one of the fumaroles. Return to the Start area with the sensor.
• Mission 2: Deploy Hex Habitats: Support scientific study in the Outer Reaches by deploying Hex Habitats where researchers will live. The Outer Reaches, west of the main Terraformers base, is a region rich with possibility for valuable scientific research. Terrabots will support this effort by deploying space hex habitats: a lab and living quarters. Hex locations are designated on the map. Robots should transport one or two hex habitats from the Start area to the areas designated on the map.
• Mission 3: Retrieve Thermal Batteries: Transport thermal batteries to help keep Pantheon City powered up and safe for inhabitants The Terraformers mission depends on batteries for many key functions. Batteries are charged and stored at an area away from living quarters, but are installed at the maintenance facility (Start Area). You must retrieve batteries from the holding area and deliver them to the Start Area. Drive your robot to the battery station, gather batteries, and transport them to the Start area.
• Mission 4: Ice Pack Lake Water Extraction:  The colony needs potable (drinking) water. Position the pipeline so it extracts water from Ice Pack Lake. Ice Pack Lake is full of potable water that can be used for drinking, cooking, and other uses. The water processing tender is in place and ready for operation. Your Terrabot needs to swing the pipeline in place over the Ice Pack Lake in order to tap it, and begin the process of providing water to the base. Robot must drive to the water facility and push the pipeline into the lake.
• Mission 5: Align Solar Panel: An aligned solar panel will harness energy from the stars and help power communications with Earth. The satellite communications station is powered by solar energy. Because the planet moves in its orbit, the adjacent solar station needs to have its panels realigned (with the local star) in order to produce power. This will ensure communications are maintained with Earth. Drive your robot to the solar panel, then lift and realign the position of the main panel. The panel should now be positioned over the base unit, its flat surface perpendicular to the board surface.

Advance Beginners Course in Robotics for 13 - 15 year olds is available with us. In this program, students will complete the following missions:

• Mission 1: Plant Terraformers Flag: Your Terrabot must maneuver to the flag station, and drop the DST flag on the marked location. This location was surveyed by DST geologist, and pre-marked for the flag. Robots must transport the flag from the Start area to the flag target circle. Once at the flag marker, the flag should be released autonomously onto the target circle.
• Mission 2: Rescue Moon Buggy: Your Terrabot must travel to the Wastelands and search for the derelict Moon Buggy. Once found, you should transport it back to the Start Area for repair. Robots must traverse the board to reach the ‘stranded’ Moon Buggy. For maximum points, robots require some mechanism for connecting with the Moon Buggy.
• Mission 3: Plug Mt. Valhalla Volcano: Plug the top of volatile Mt. Valhalla to redirect geothermal energy to Pantheon City Your Terrabot must travel to the active volcano Mt. Valhalla. Once there, your Terrabot must cap the volcano with a specially designed thermal capping plug (ping pong ball) to siphon off the volcano’s thermal energy. The thermal energy will then be transported to an underground thermal battery station. Robots must transport Capping Plug from Start area to Mt. Valhalla. For maximum points, robots require some mechanism for placing the ball into the crater.
• Mission 4: Move Crater Rocks to Pulverizer: Move crater rocks to the Thor Rock Pulverizer, where they will be smashed into powder. Two Pantheon crater areas have been surveyed and selected as building sites for a future laboratory and movie theater. Prior to construction, rocks in the craters must be removed and transported to the Thor Rock Pulverizer, where they will be crushed for mineral extraction processing. Terrabots must gather the rocks from the craters and transport them to the designated rock corral at the Rock Pulverizing area. Once rocks are in place, make contact with rod to release the pulverizer hammer and smash the rocks.

Students will learn basic programming with Lego Mindstorm NXT programming. They will be directed to build a robot and use sensors to make it “Artificially intelligent”. When the students have completed 20 minor tasks, they will be assigned two major missions (which require integration of Math and Science skills) on hypothetical moons.

Missions to be accomplished for this program:

• Mission 1: Rock Removal: Your robot must drive to the designated rock circles, gather the rocks, and push or carry them to the extraction area. A rock (LEGO brick) should be placed inside each of the three red circles prior to starting the mission. The robot must start in the designated Start Area. No part of the robot can extend beyond this border, even if it is not in contact with the board surface. The robot must reach and gather as many of the rocks it can, then push or carry the rocks till they can be deposited in the Extraction Area.
• Mission 2: Water Extraction: Your robot must follow the river to the Water Tower and lake, then lower a ‘water extraction pipe’ into the lake. The robot must start in the designated Start Area. No part of the robot can extend beyond this border, even if it is not in contact with the board surface. The robot should include a ‘moving pipe’ feature that can be lowered onto the surface of the lake. This pipe should remain above the board surface during the journey to the lake. If the pipe makes contact with the lake surface, it is considered a successful mission.

This course is for 10 - 13 year olds. Curriculum is as per Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Lab. 

Pantheon is the largest planet in the KRML Cluster. It has an atmosphere that can support human and plant life. Pantheon has drinkable water, but it currently lacks soil rich enough to support plants. The terrain is relatively smooth. The planet has one major volcano– Mt. Valhalla– which has shown predictable thermal activity. The planet also has lakes, gaseous fumaroles, deep fissures, and meteorite craters. Rock analysis has revealed an abundance of minerals.  Deep Space Terraforming teams have completed construction of a hydroponics greenhouse, and are growing edible plants there. In addition there are space habitats, a communications transmitter, solar station, atmosphere factory, and some roadways already established on the planet’s surface.

In ROBO 1, students will complete the following missions:

• Draw Bridge: Students will build and program a mechanical drawbridge that moves using a worm gear configuration. Triggered by a motion sensor, the Drawbridge will rise and lower for passing boats.
• Folk Lift: Students will build and program a mechanical forklift that moves a load using a pulley and belt configuration. Triggered by a tilt sensor, the forks on the model lift and lower a pallet.
• Tower Crane: Students will build and program a mechanical tower crane that rotates on its base using a worm gear configuration and a hand crank. Triggered by a tilt sensor, the lifting hook will be raised and lowered using a motor and a belt-driven pulley.

Robotic Training of Intermediate Level for 6 to 10 year olds is available here. Interactive training program is designed for the children. This course covers 3 projects. The details are as listed below:

• Finish line: Student will build and program a mechanical finish line that waves a signal flag using a system of levers. Triggered by a motion sensor, the flag will signal when a driver has won the race.
• Ferris wheel: Students will build and program a mechanical Ferris wheel that rotates using gears and a motor and axle mechanism. Triggered by a motion sensor, the model rotates and stops for passengers.
• Carousel: Students will build and program a mechanical carousel that rotates on its base using a crown gear configuration. Triggered by a tilt sensor, the model will rotate at different speeds and in different directions.

Advance Beginner Robotic Course for 6 - 10 year olds is provided here. This course covers 2 themes with 6 projects. The Play Soccer theme focuses on Mathematics [Theme A] and the Adventure Stories theme focuses on Language using the model to dramatize events [Theme B].

Theme A

• Goal Kicker: students measure the distance the kicking leg model kicks paper balls.
• Goal Keeper: students calculate the number of blocks, goals, misses as they try to flick paper balls past a mechanical goal keeper. They also learn to program an automatic score keeping system.
• Cheerful Fans: students apply a numerical rating system to judging the best performance in three subjective.

Theme B

• Airplane Rescue: students learn important interview questions: Who, What, Where, Why, and How and report a story of Max the LEGO® mini figure’s airplane ride.
• Giant Escape: students act out the dialogue, role-playing as Mia and Max wake the sleeping giant and must escape the forest.
• Sailboat Storm: students describe the sequence of events as Max endures a thunderstorm at sea.

The Amazing Mechanisms theme focuses on Physical Science concepts [Theme A] and the Wild Animals theme focuses on Technology, emphasizing the concept of sensing and responding to external stimuli [Theme B].

Theme A

• Dancing Birds: students learn about pulleys and belts, experimenting with the size of pulleys and the crossing and uncrossing of the belt.
• Smart Spinner: students investigate the effect of smaller and larger gears on a spinning top.
• Drumming Monkey: students learn about levers, cams, and patterns of movement. They experiment with the number and position of cams, using them as the effort causing the monkey’s arms to drum up and down on a surface at different rates.

Theme B

• Hungry Alligator: students program the alligator to snap its jaw shut when the motion sensor sees something near its mouth.
• Roaring Lion: students program the lion to sit up and then lie down and roar when it senses a bone.
• Flying Bird: students program the tilt sensor to activate a flapping sound as they move the tail up and down, flapping the wings. They also program the motion sensor to activate a tweet sound when the bird tilts down to its feet.

This eight-week course is the second of two courses focusing on “boosting basics” at the middle school level. Middle School Writing Enhancement emphasizes the technical parts of writing such as comma and semi-colon placement, compound sentences, words often confused, and capitalization. These are the areas where many good, young writers who have creative talent often need reinforcement.

This course has been created for the youngest eager writers, starting at 2nd grade. During the eight week pre-sentence course, students are introduced to parts of speech and taught how to recognize and use them in a sentence.
