Sarah Whitehead

Sarah: Teaching English, PE, Science, Special Ed & more.

Qualification:

PGCE, ISENCO

Experience:

Over 12 years of one-to-one tutoring experience as a special needs teacher teaching the core subjects, I have had the privilege of working with students from a variety of backgrounds, learning abilities, and educational needs. I specialize in primary education, which includes students ranging from ages 3 to 14. My approach has been shaped through years of hands-on experience, adapting to different learning styles and challenges. I have successfully helped students improve in key subjects like Math, English, Science, and Literacy, as well as offering support for preparation in important exams such as SATs.

In Literacy, I focus on reading comprehensions, creative writing, phonics, vocabulary building, spelling, and grammar. In Numeracy, I focus on number operations, basic arithmetic, problem-solving, time management, and mathematical reasoning. I help students develop strong learning habits, time management, and exam preparation strategies. For Special Needs Support, I have experience working with students with dyslexia, ADHD, ASD, and learning difficulties, providing tailored lessons to help them thrive academically.

I am a qualified teacher with a PGCE in primary education and over 22 years of teaching experience. Prior to this, I worked as an applied behavior analysis with students with ASD.

Approach:

My teaching style is student-centered, meaning I always start by understanding each individual student's strengths, weaknesses, and unique learning preferences. I believe in creating a positive and nurturing learning environment, where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and express themselves without fear of judgment.

I create interactive and engaging lessons. I use a wide variety of tools and resources such as games, visuals, educational apps, and hands-on activities to keep students engaged. The goal is not just to help students understand the subject matter but to make learning fun and memorable.

I am adaptable. I adjust my teaching methods based on each student's learning pace and style. For example, some students may need more visual aids, while others may benefit from auditory explanations or kinesthetic activities.

I help the student build confidence, as many primary students struggle with self-esteem when faced with challenges. I focus on celebrating small successes and encouraging persistence, which fosters a growth mindset and helps students develop confidence in their abilities.

I understand the importance of clear communication. I break down complex concepts into simpler, manageable steps. I ensure that explanations are always clear, and I give plenty of time for questions and review to ensure full understanding.

My strengths are that I am patient and empathic. I understand that each student has their own pace of learning, and I am patient in guiding them through difficult concepts. I have strong subject knowledge. With extensive experience in primary education, I have a deep understanding of the national curriculum and how to align lessons with learning objectives. This allows me to ensure that my students meet and exceed grade expectations through customized learning plans.

I excel in effective communication with parents. I maintain open lines of communication with parents, providing regular updates on progress, challenges, and any adjustments to lesson plans. This ensures that we are all aligned in the child's educational journey.
