Teaching students at home had been my side venture for many years while I was pursuing my further studies and simultaneously working for MNCs in India. I treated students with care and respect. I believe and trust that they are the most creative, unstoppable, and energetic youngsters. All they need is the right guidance to let their energy flow in a positive direction for a better future. I would also like to mention that if a student ever fails, it is not because of their capabilities and calibre, but because of the facilitator (teacher) who has to take the blame.
During my home tutoring experience, I helped students overcome their anxieties over examinations. Additionally, I am good at motivating which helped students improve their interest in studies and surmount their reluctance over schooling and book reading.
Thanks for the question.
1. I would like to listen to the student's preference first before I start teaching anything to him. Listening to students helps a teacher understand them better.
2. Be friendly - a friendly approach leads to knowing the student's likes and dislikes, i.e. a teacher could easily figure out why he is lacking somewhere or is not interested in something. This may also lead to an open conversation with students wherein they may reveal everything about them and the teacher could easily spot the mark that needs to be either rewarded or shaped.
3. Dig deeper (Thought Process of Students) - Students often exceed the expectations of their teachers. Understanding the thought process of students helps a teacher plan lessons more effectively. It allows the teacher to start clearly and straightforwardly and to know where they can delve deeper, enhancing the student's knowledge with greater wisdom.
4. Extra-curricular activities: The teacher should also discuss the student's interests. Such a conversation boosts students' self-confidence and they start rewarding themselves, also they may never blame themselves for losing or sell themselves short, ultimately improving their confidence and helping them maintain enthusiastic behavior.
5. Reinforcing a positive learning attitude: A student's behavior cannot be judged by what we see in a few days. We need to understand the purpose behind their behaviors. The solution to any behavior issues is time and patience. I always pay special attention to below-average students and the children who seem distracted. I spend more time with them and I have done my best until now to shape their future by nurturing their minds with the right wisdom.
