When planning lessons, I start by clearly defining the learning objectives. What key concepts, skills, or ideas do I want the student to walk away with? I then reverse-engineer the lesson structure to ensure those objectives are met. This involves selecting relevant course materials, designing activities and exercises, anticipating potential stumbling blocks, and mapping out the flow of the lesson.
I also take time to understand each student's current knowledge level, learning style, and goals. This allows me to customize the lesson content and pace accordingly. I'm a big believer in the "I do, we do, you do" framework - I'll first demonstrate a new concept, then guide the student through practice problems, and finally have them work independently to cement their understanding.
Tutoring Techniques:
My tutoring approach is centered on active engagement and frequent feedback. I don't just lecture at students, but rather facilitate discussions, ask probing questions, and provide real-time guidance as the student works through problems.
I also place a heavy emphasis on building strong fundamentals. Rather than jumping straight into advanced topics, I make sure students have a solid grasp of the core building blocks. This lays the necessary groundwork for them to progress and tackle more complex material.
In addition, I utilize various learning aids like visual aids, mnemonics, and hands-on activities to appeal to different learning modalities. And I'm always happy to provide supplementary resources like practice quizzes, solution walkthroughs, and recommended reading.
