Experience:

I have been a tutor in London for the past 3 years before moving out to Dubai this summer. I have 6 years experience in primary teaching (KS1 and KS2) as well as experience of teaching children with SEN. I have prepared year 6 children for their SATS examinations as well as working with younger children to improve their basic English and maths skills.

Approach:

When I first meet a new tutee I start by assessing the students current level of skills and understanding of that particular subject area. That will then allow me to create a tailor-made series of sessions based on improving the areas needed. In maths, I believe in teaching skills based on a PVA approach. Firstly I introduce a new mathematical concept practically using concrete resources before moving onto visual representations. After the tutee has shown a good conceptual understanding it is then that we will look at the more abstract, formal written calculations. With reasoning and problem solving is a new focus within the Brish curriculum I also incorporate these style of questions into the sessions too. For English, I believe that purposeful writing is essential when teaching children how to write effectively. I believe in teaching the skills needed (grammar, vocabulary, punctuation) in individual sessions before incorporating that into longer pieces of writing which allow the tutee to apply their newly developed skills. Introducing tutee to a wide range of texts is also very important for introducing them to new vocabulary as well as different genre types and author styles.
