BA and MA Linguistics, PhD Candidate Linguistic Anthropology

Experience:

I have a BA and MA in linguistics from the University of Chicago and a teaching diploma (DELTA) from Cambridge University. I am currently a PhD candidate in anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. I have taught English as a Second Language and Academic English at the secondary and post-secondary level since 1998. I am a former certified IELTS examiner and teach IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, SAT, ACT preparation. I also teach linguistics, anthropology, journalism, history, and drama.

Approach:

Tutoring is a really wonderful opportunity for one-to-one or small group engagement between students and their teacher. As a tutor, I work with students to devise a schedule that matches their exam or coursework objectives and time frame required. I then plan my lessons as I do my large group classes. I prepare summary notes and divide the lesson into different learning tasks and practice opportunities. I also assign homework tasks that align with students’ exam or coursework needs so as to support their greater academic aims. My lessons are divided up into teaching and practice segments through a diverse array of materials that lends itself to students needs and learning styles. So what makes my lessons one of a kind? Well, I have succeeded in helping students achieve excellent exam scores and course grades.
