Experience:

September 2014 - Present: Full-time teacher and learning coach with daily one-to-one tutoring sessions across a wide range of subjects. September 2012 to June 2014 – Full-time secondary school History and Geography teacher, St Mary’s Academy CBS, Carlow, Ireland (12-18 year olds). During this time I was heavily involved in one-to-one tuition with students of varying degrees of abilities and expectations and tutored to students at highest possible secondary school level in Ireland.

Approach:

I have over two years experience teaching Geography, History and Media Studies in St Mary’s Academy CBS, Carlow, Ireland. It is an all boys school with over 600 students. My experience so far has taught me to be a learning facilitator, which I believe to be a highly efficient way of teaching. I believe that if students can construct their own learning experience that they will retain the information provided for longer while also learning to appreciate fully their own capabilities. I place a strong faith in the implementation of ICT in the classroom and encourage students to embrace it and use it as a tool to confirm and strengthen their knowledge of every topic. The school is an inclusive one, with students coming from a wide-range of backgrounds and learning abilities. Because of this, I have learned a comprehensive range of differentiation techniques and ensure to implement them in every lesson. My references will testify to this fact. As well as this, I have been active in taking on duties outside of the classroom including football coaching, yard supervision and helping out with environmental issues. I also believe that continuous professional development is key and it is something that every teacher must embrace. In my time as a teacher I have taken on some extra development courses in areas such as SEN, dyslexia and classroom numeracy and I have gained invaluable experience teaching resource and SEN classes on a weekly basis. I would consider myself to be a positive and outgoing individual with ability to motivate, help and encourage students and colleagues alike.
