I first identify where the problem lies, is it a lack of motivation? a lack of practical abstraction of the theory? a need for extra assignments? or something else? Next, I make sure the theoretical basis is understood (not learned by heart) and I design exercises to challenge the student. Starting with very basic assignments and increasing the difficulty as we work our way through the course. Finally, I make sure the student can solve all the problems without any help.
