  18. Question: Before new medications and drugs are made available to people, animals, such as dogs, monkeys and rats, are used for testing purposes. Some people think that using animals to test new drugs should be banned. Do you agree or disagree?
  19. Sample Main Paragraph (without an example) Quite clearly, it is necessary to use animals for new-drug testing as testing with people is not appropriate. Untested drugs cannot be given to patients. Obviously, it would be much worse to test new drugs on adults and children, or to let people die because there was not enough information about the effects of using a drug. Many animal rights activists have stated that this is cruel, which, in a very few cases, might be true. However, there is legislation in most countries which sets standards for animal treatment. Also, laboratories have guidelines to prevent cruelty..
  20. Using animals for new-drug testing is necessary. Testing with people is clearly inappropriate and untested drugs cannot be given to patients, so what choice is there but to use animals? It can never be acceptable to let people die of an illness when there might be a medication available, but it cannot be used because there was not enough information about its side-effects.

  30. Question Many students do not complete their school education. Why is this? How can the problem be solved? Give reasons for your answer and include examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.
  31. Most students who do not complete school do so because of family problems and issues. Some parents are not interested in education and do not provide financial, emotional and practical support for their children to study. Education is usually compulsory but, despite this, some parents and guardians have no interest in whether or not their son or daughter actually attend. Teenage girls, especially in developing countries, are often encouraged to leave school, get married and start a family..
  32. Furthermore, low-level jobs are often available to teenagers even if they do not have a good education. The third reason is pressure to earn money. Some families are poor and need their children to work in order to increase the income. All these problems will create young people who do not have any skills and who will not be able to improve their lives for their family, community or their country.
  33. There are several things that can be done about these problems. Parents should be encouraged to send their children to school. Schools with baby-minding facilities should be opened specially for married students. The government needs to stress the importance of education and even offer financial support to students to continue. This will encourage students to stay at school rather than start working.
  34. Question Drug abuse is a problem in many countries. What are the effects of drug abuse and how can this problem be solved? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.
  35. Introduction Drug abuse has been prevalent in many countries for at least 200 years. Billions of dollars are spent internationally preventing drug use, treating addicts, and fighting drug-related crime. Although drugs threaten many societies, their effects can also be combated successfully. This essay looks at some of the effects of drug use on society, and suggests some solutions to the problem.
  36. Main idea Drug abuse creates multiple problems for countries and communities. The medical and psychological effects are very obvious. Quite clearly, addicts cannot function as normal members of society. They neglect or abuse their families, and eventually require expensive treatment and hospitalization. The second effect is on crime. Huge police resources are needed to fight smuggling and drug-dealing. Criminal gangs and mafia underworlds develop with the money from drug sales.
  37. However, the menace of drugs can be fought. Education is the first battle. Children need to be frequently told at home and in school about the dangers of drug-taking. Everyone needs to be aware of the effects so that they can avoid them. A second approach is to increase police manpower and enforce laws to stop drug dealers. Finally, and most importantly, the main target should be the drug-user. Families and counsellors need to talk to children and young people at risk. Parents need to ensure that their children become responsible adults. Governments need to provide worthwhile jobs and housing to give young people a role in society.
