  1. The Community Camel Solar Panel Reservoir Guttering The community Camel was invented and patented by Patrick McKeown The community camel is a self irrigating, extremely low maintenance poly tunnel. I have recognised an opportunity exists to deliver a huge array of low cost organic fruit and vegetables to the mass market. The cost of fruit and vegetables has risen significantly and the problem of "food miles" will increase as oil prices rise. The price of fruit and vegetables has increase significantly in the last couple of years with the average family spending 1500 euro's per year. The Camel will reduce this spend significantly. Even with budgets being stretched households spending on ethical goods has increased. The use of hosepipe bans and the introduction of water metres will have a detrimental effect on the grow your own" community. Water shortages may be widespread in future due to population increase and the need to find alternative and sustainable methods of reducing our dependency on imports will only increase. The impact of climate will lead to issues surrounding food security, the Community Camel is an insurance against price inflation and fluctuating supply. It is both economical and ethical. The camel will have a "buy back" policy, if you have too much of a specific fruit or vegetables, we promise to swap or buy them from you, so saving on waste and reducing your costs. I have worked on this design and researched the issues for the past five years; I studied green technologies at UCD. I also have post grads in teaching and IT and a degree in marketing. I had a successful home improvement and landscaping business, so I know the market very well. I am working part time lecturing in applied economics and business studies. I believe the best way forward is through microeconomics. I know this can make a difference to people's lives and will lead to sustainable community employment which will have a tangible effect on communities and their well being I am passionate, driven and would give myself 100% always in this concept. Food security, food miles, waste, and the prices of organic fruit and vegetables are hampering access to fruit and vegetables, for many groups in society. 1
  2. The Opportunity There are I .2 million gardens in Ireland and 40 million in the UK, with a further 500,000 waiting for allotments. I have a patent for a self irrigating Poly tunnel (greenhouse) system which will provide very cheap organic fruit and vegetables to the mass market. The company will provide maintenance and advice through the use of the "Urban Gardeners" which can be employed or by franchise. We will train all gardeners on all aspects of setting up tunnels, this is a cost effective way of providing community employment. This model would be for the large scale "Camel Clusters" The average family will spend over 1500.00 euro per year on fruit and vegetables, this would cost significantly less, around 150 to 200 euro depending on what type of maintenance contract one would opt for. The first year would be used to develop product, build awareness, through social media, website, garden centre stands, tradefairs (of which I have lots of experience) and contacting the large wholesale hardware distributors. The website and garden centres would be the contact for residential customers and advice would be offered at source, alternatively the website will have all the advice needed in setting up tunnel. There will also be scope to partner with seedling and growing communities and aliening the business model to adapt to this is the first year.
