Course Details

The focus of this hands-on visual art class is to introduce and reinforce the basic elements and principles of art, while covering a range of lettering and bookmaking styles, spanning centuries and continents. We will also cover techniques and safe handling of a variety of art media and tools. All of this will take place through planning, producing and discussing artwork.

Course Levels:

• Level 1 : FOUNDATION HAND (Units: Drawing horizontal & vertical lines & Basic Alphabet)
• Level 2 : INTERMEDIATE “The ITALIC CALLIGRAPHY” (Units: Book Binding, & Chinese Alphabet)
• Level 3 : PRIMARY “The GOTHIC CALLIGRAPHY” (Units: European Calligraphy & Islamic Lettering)
• Level 4 : ADVANCED “The UNCIAL” (Units: Classroom Mural, Vandalism Vs Street Art)

Among other things, we will explore creative solutions to design challenges, the importance of craftsmanship, the impact of composition on an artwork, how to effectively talk about art and aesthetics, and historical and cultural contexts of artworks and art movements. This class requires that you be mature, self-disciplined, and respectful of the art studio or the Centre.
