Effective educational leadership makes the most significant difference in improving learning and successful student outcomes. This may be direct or indirect leadership and be exercised in a number of ways. Ideally, school leaders are ‘instructional’ leaders while those that effect significant and sustained change can be referred to as ‘transformational’. There are virtually no documented examples of schools facing challenge being turned around without the intervention of a powerful, strategic leader. Principals cannot do the whole leadership task by themselves. Leaders are needed at all levels in a school even though accountability remains at the top level.
