Course Details

Effective educational leadership makes the most significant difference in improving learning and successful student outcomes. This may be direct or indirect leadership and be exercised in a number of ways. Ideally, school leaders are ‘instructional’ leaders while those that effect significant and sustained change can be referred to as ‘transformational’. There are virtually no documented examples of schools facing challenge being turned around without the intervention of a powerful, strategic leader. Principals cannot do the whole leadership task by themselves. Leaders are needed at all levels in a school even though accountability remains at the top level.

Participants will:

• Undertake assessment to determine and understand their own leadership style and how it determines their actions
• Learn about the traits of very successful school leaders
• Understand how regulatory authorities assess the capabilities of school leaders
• Undertake a piece of action research in their own schools before sharing this with other course delegates
• Learn how to promote their vision or manage change
• Investigate the strengths and weaknesses of different leadership structures within a school

This course is the nexus of a suite of ‘Leadership’ courses; it may be taken as a stand-alone course or be combined with one or more from the suite.
