The belly dance classes have become widely accepted in many countries due to the numerous health benefits of the dance itself. Originally, belly dancing was performed not as a group, but as a solo act involving various abdominal motions. However, the art itself takes many different forms and variations, depending on the country and the region. However, it emphasises articulation of the hips.

In our dance classes we focus on relaxed movements of the torso muscles. This is unlike other western dances that involve the movements of limbs over open space. Generally, the motions in belly dancing can be categorized into three variations:

  • Percussive – this variation involves short, staggered movements of the hips that closely follow the music. The movements usually accentuate or punctuate the beat of the music. The movements in this category include hip drops, outwards hip hits, and hip twists.
  • Fluid – this variation involves flowing movements wherein the body maintains a continuous motion following melodic and lyrical sections in a musical piece. The usual movements in this category include tilting hip circles and infinity loops, both of which can be combined for more variety.
  • Shimmies, shivers and vibrations – this variation involves minimal, continues movements of the hips or the ribcage done in a quick pace to achieve depth of movement. These movements are usually combined with other movements during a fast rhythmic music piece.
