Tutoring Approach

Padraig is a very talented and knowledgeable tutor. He was so helpful that he made what was hard, easy to my daughter. My daughter failed the math test twice when she was studying with other tutors, but when padraig took over she passed right away with only 3 mistakes out of 60 questions, and she got accepted in the school. Over my nine years, I have created the curriculum for PSAT, SAT and Advance Placement test prep sessions, trained teachers and students to either facilitate or co-facilitate prep sessions and instructed students one-on-one, or in small groups in the school setting. For the past eleven years, I have also assisted undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students with developing study programs for Linguistics, Literature, Composition and Philosophy (including Rhetoric).

Tutoring Approach

Each time I tutor a student, I create a file for them and administer a benchmark assessment (undergraduate, graduate and doctoral candidates should submit a recent writing sample) and a short online survey to discover their strengths, weaknesses and learning styles. Upon initial consultation, I will also converse with the pupil to find out what their goals are. Much like my classroom teaching, I disaggregate the data to ensure that I design the best plan that fits the student's specific needs based on his/her learning style. I use a mixture of technology and a subscribed study plan to help keep the student engaged and learning. I often give informal assessments to check for an increase in a student's abilities and strengths. Then, I give a summative assessment, usually online, to gauge student progress. Secondary students will be asked to keep an interactive notebook while university students are encouraged to keep an online journal. All students will have access to an array of both technology-based interactive learning tools, and, when necessary, create products to show their learning mixed with one-on-one activities to help improve their learning. For instance, when tutoring for English Language instruction, students will work on activities ranging from words sounds and picture cards to word stems and roots to help them identify the meaning of words they've never seen before. Everything a student does with me will include progress monitoring so that they understand what they must do to reach their goals for our sessions.
