As it is known, school is a major part of each child’s life. They spend the majority of their time in the school, learning new things. However, school holidays too are a major part of a school year. Children eagerly wait for those long summer and winter holidays. We as children used to look forward to those long winter breaks so that we could build marshmallow towers in that yummy hot chocolate. Sledging down the neighborhood hill on that last day before the vacation began was, in fact, the favorite thing to do.

A long winter break can actually be rather advantageous for the kids. Just as the month of Christmas approaches, some of the schools take a week off while other takes about a month off. Listed below are a few of the advantages of a long winter break.

Getting Time to Spend With the Family

One of the advantages of these long winter breaks is the fact that the families can spend some time together. Schools often take up most of thechild’s time and homework keeps the child engaged even at homes. Holidays are a great time for the families to bond and the kids to indulge in some fun activities with their parents or siblings.

can choose to go on a vacation together or opt for family picnics and outings. This helps the child to shift their focus away from the school and onto their families. Longer ways help in reconnecting and therefore are much favored by the families.

Helps the Child to Do What They Love

Children can opt for hobby classes which might not be possible during the days when they have to go to the school. It could be anything from skating, dancing, singing, cooking, learning to play an instrument, painting, creative writing or literally just anything that the child likes.

While some activities like theater production are best to be carried during an extended vacation. This would increase their knowledge of things and is, in fact, a good way to spend time.

Helps Them to Discover New Things

Children are rather curious creatures and are always eager to learn and discover new things. For instance, if you choose to travel during the vacations, your child would be able to learn about a new culture, the language of the place as well as their history. The child might also be able to develop certain social skills. It might also be possible that the child discovers his/her own interests and decides to pursue it.

Gives Time to Indulge in Traditions and Rituals

For some of the families, religion plays a rather important role, especially in the holiday season. With such an extended break like the long winter break, the kids would get enough time to take part in the traditions and rituals.

Often kids do not get a chance to participate in certain festivals because of the fact that the school is in session. For example, in the Orthodox faith, Christmas is celebrated for about twelve days from 25th December to 6th January. This would help the children to know more about their own culture.

Helps Kids to Relax

Everyone, of course, wants their children to be competitive, but it is important to understand the fact that the students need a break from the classroom education. Students spend most of their time in the classroom, learning new things which can be tiring at times and leave the child frustrated. It must also be understood that the kids can only learn a limited amount of things at a given time. Forcing them to sit and learn wouldn’t do anything good.

Therefore, a break is essential and long winter breaks are just that. It gives the chance to the child to break free from the daily routine and relax. This mental break is necessary for the kids so that they can start afresh when they go back to school. These breaks enable the child to rest a bit and give them the boost that that need.

There has been a continuous debate as to whether the winter breaks should be short or long. As seen above, longer breaks are definitely beneficial and give the child to experience freedom and be creative. It is the responsibility of the teacher and the parents to ensure that the child gets adequate breaks so that he/she can learn properly.
