United Arab Emirates officers hope that a new VISA scheme for overseas students may help in the retention of international talent in the region and encourage a series of new campuses to open in the academic sector.
The new policy grants a 5-year residency for all international students, increasing to 10 years for the most gifted applicants. It’s the latest incentive offered by governing bodies in Dubai to entice young professionals and students to stay in the region after graduation.
Over the last few years, universities in the United Arab Emirates have made advanced efforts to build on the numbers of their international students by offering student accommodation deals and scholarships.
International student figures are already high in the UAE. For example, at the American University of Sharjah, non-nationals make up 84% of the student.
In spite of that, the region faces a drain in talent, with the majority of students returning home after a certain period of time.
According to the new policy, students within the Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) can even obtain part-time work permits for getting employment at any one of the four thousand companies in Dubai’s Creative Cluster.
Mohamad Abdullah, the managing director of DIAC said, “With the volume we have in terms of universities and students at DIAC, it has become a destination and a hub for higher education. With that sort of pace and with the support of this new visa policy, it will attract a lot of foreign investments in higher education.”
When it comes to allowing institutions setting up new branches in the city, the decision-makers, should, however, remain selective.
