Despite the saying “the pen is mightier than a sword,” the pen itself may not be enough to be an effective writer.

Although most of us may all like to think of ourselves as the next modern-era Shakespeare, inspiration alone cannot be the only key to effective writing. You need something more. The below tips can help.

1. Create your personal word bank

This unique process can help you improve your vocabulary; a must-have trait for writing an essay, be it for any competitive examination like the SAT, GRE, or GMAT, or for any other personal reasons.

2. Pretend that you are a reporter

When you’re assigned a topic, go ahead and explore the options in depth. Get curious; ask yourself questions. The more questions you ask yourself, the more information you are going to unravel.

A strong essay is one that is filled with relevant information, facts, and stats from the top to the bottom. Can you?

3. Touch on both sides of the argument

If you want to write a complex essay, it might help to outline both sides of the argument before you start your writing. This will give you a better idea of the approach that you are going to take.

Note: You must choose only one side to focus on while you are writing. Do not mix them up.

4. Create a few topic sentences

A topic sentence is the first sentence of a paragraph that summarizes the entire paragraph at a stretch. This can help you stay on track while you are writing.

5. Check your sentences backward for grammatical errors

Is every sentence reflecting the correct tense? Are the possessive nouns plural (in case you are writing about plurals)? Are the commas placed in the right places? Reading the text backward can help you determine these errors in a matter of a jiffy.
