Remedial Plan For Weak Students in English

English is considered as the official language in most of the countries. More than 50% of the population communicates in it. The schools and colleges have a separate paper on this subject.

We have got novel laureates who have sculpted their masterpieces in English. Fascinated by the English language, we have encountered many parents go berserk over it because their wards are not up to the mark on that subject. The schools are stressing more than before over the specific language so that the children don’t face any obstacle in their professional life in the future.

If you wish to be an English maestro, follow these simple yet useful remedial plans:

• It’s foolishness to be afraid of making mistakes. If you don’t utter or write wrong English, your teachers, guardians, and others won’t be able to correct them.

• Get involved with the environments where the people usually speak English. Join a recreation club, Spoken English Class, Theatre Group, etc. Try to talk as much as you can.

• Read English novels, story books, newspapers. Watch English news channels, English movies with native language subtitles.

• Practice daily routine wise. Make your schedule. Dedicate a particular period for the English language.

• Four golden tricks: - Reading, writing, listening and speaking. Work hard on each segment.

• Converse with a friend. Ask him/her to correct your mistakes. You can make a telephonic conversation, face to face chat, message each other and use the social media sites.

• YouTube is gaining followers like the bonfire. Whenever, you get time, watch the English learning tutorial videos.

• Get hold of a dictionary. Whenever you come across any new word, search the meaning. Google is of great help in this regard. You will get the associated grammar, synonym, antonym, etc.

• Note down the new words so that you can remember them. Try to make sentences using those words. 

• English is a modern language that came from the mixture of several styles and is still improvising. People of different countries and cultures speak English in their unique accent. It’s not necessary to utter the sentences just like the British. There are several kinds of English like the UK, USA, South African, etc. All are correct. Take care of the differences. For example, we use the term ‘elevator’ in the US version, whereas, we use the term ‘lift’ in the UK version. Both the words mean the same.

• English words are divided into nine classes known as Parts of Speech: Noun, Article, Pronoun, Preposition, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Interjection and Conjunction.

• Solve English grammar question bank. Most of the books provide the answers at the end. First, you solve them yourself. Then, check whether your response matches the given ones.

• Don’t hesitate to ask your seniors if you stuck somewhere.

Suggestions for the teachers and parents:

• Reward the children when they get better marks than before in English subject.

• Be patient. A language is not learned in a single day. It takes time to grab it correctly, especially if it is not the mother tongue.

• Talk to the pupils in English throughout the day.

• Take small tests. Give marks. Make them revise the mistakes. Ask questions and tell them to answer in English.

A twist:

Though, it is not advisable to give punishment to the little souls, yet, I would like to suggest you to provide small penalties like not giving them their toy to play for few days, or, not letting them watch their favorite cartoons if they don’t speak or practice English.

• Parents must push the offsprings to study English. Don’t let the outside noises and others disturb them while they are exploring.

• Buy them children’s fairy tales and fiction books. Give them dictation from them. Then check whether they have penned down correctly.

• Teach them the regular sentences that are used on a daily basis like morning/afternoon, evening/night wishes, asking for breakfast/lunch/dinner, asking for permission to visit washroom, etc. Regular ordinary conversations in English can become the children’s habit. For example, “May I go to washroom?”, or, “I am hungry,” “Good morning,” “Thank you,” etc.

Some fantastic tricks for senior students:

• Have a group discussion on a specific topic in English. Listen actively. Interact among yourselves. Give your viewpoints. Solve the raising queries.

• Use your body clock. For example, if you are a night person, choose to study English in the night.

• Take ample rest in between studies. Don’t consider more than 50 minutes at a stretch, take small breaks in between. Eat well, exercise, play games (outdoor). Pursue your hobby like dancing, singing, photography to refresh and boost your mind.

• Record your voice. Listen to your intonations and mistakes.

• Stop procrastination.

• Don’t translate a sentence into English directly from your native language. Think in English. Talk to yourself whenever you are alone.

• Use the right words on the apt occasion. It is okay to apply slangs with friends, but not when the elders are around.

The English language is the treasure of imagination. Don’t overstress yourself in perfecting the language. Relax and have fun.
