Inescapable Reasons behind the highest demand for maths and science teachers in the UAE

Since several years, there is an incredibly increasing demand for maths and science teachers across the UAE. The education sector is aiming at making the students prepare to go for international tests, get employed by big companies, generate revenue and be responsible citizens. 

What does the strategy of the Ministry of Education for 2017-2021 say?

A strategic plan for 2017-2021 was launched by the Ministry of Education for developing an unorthodox education system that can construct a knowledgeable and globally competitive society. The system involves all age groups to be capable of meeting the demand for the future labor market. It will make sure of the quality of the consequences of the Ministry of Education. It will deliver the best services for internal and external customers.  

Following values dictate the new plan:

• Citizenship-and Responsibility
• Islam’s Principles-and Values
• Commitment and-Transparency
• Equality and-Justice
• Participation and-Accountability
• Science, Technology and Innovation

The performance level of the educational system:

It is since the year 2008, the UAE has taken participation in several international tests for examining and benchmarking the educational system’s level of performance. 

The following tests are:

• PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment)
• PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study)
• TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study)

The UAE managed to get top ranks in the Arab World in compliance with the National Agenda that demanded the country to rank among the top 20 in PISA by the year 2021. 

In the year 2017, the introduction of national-level EmSAT (Emirates Standardized Test) took place through the hands of the Ministry of Education for measuring the learner’s knowledge of English, Arabic, Science, and Maths.

Three kinds of tests are included in EmSAT:

• Baseline Test: Measures the students’ skills and knowledge needed for Grade 1. 
• Advantage Test: Tracks the students’ development in Grades 4, 6, 8 and 10 during the time of their general education.
• Achieve Test: Measures the students’ knowledge and skills in Grade 12. This particular test is important for getting admission in college and placement. 

The concentration is on Science and Maths:

Children or students are curious to experiment with materials, do puzzles, play with numbers and explore their world independently. It happens especially in the early years. As they grow, loss of interest in critical thinking, problem-solving skills and subjects involving numbers can be noticed.

The methods of traditional thinking and learning facts by mugging up are some of the reasons why kids lose hold in science and maths. They fail to grab a lucrative career in science, engineering, and technology. 

World Economic Forum’s 2018 edition of the Future of Job report specified that among the sphere of established roles that are supposed to be in high demand in the coming years up to 2022 are scientists, data analysts, software and application developers, social media specialists, e-commerce specialists, etc. 

Furthering towards the knowledge-based economy, the more focus will be on the careers linked to science, technology, engineering, and maths. Hence, the UAE schools are aiming at exposing the students to STEM. As per Global Indian International School (GIIS) that has its campuses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, incorporating STEM education throughout the curriculum with the objective to empower the learners with a thorough understanding of the critical concepts will serve the purpose. 

Upskilling the teachers:

The proper integration of STEM subjects into the school curriculum will help in upskilling the teachers so that they can deliver cross-curricular projects. The STEM is supposed to be more problem solving, constructive and enquiry based in nature. The integration needs a revision of the curriculum and the provision of the additional teacher training.

A dynamic curriculum and the open-minded teachers will let the STEM curriculum cross the curricular discussions and the opportunities that will boost the aspect of learning.

Improvement of the teaching system:

The UAE has experienced a new system for teachers licensing known as TELS UAE of Teacher and Educational Leadership Standards and Licensing Program. It was in the year 2017 that the introduction of the Professional Licensing Scheme for the teachers took place. It is expected to be completely implemented by 2021 aligned with the UAE National Agenda’s needs. The system will standardize the Emiratis qualifications and expatriate the teachers in both public and private schools. The teachers are supposed to qualify a national examination and display a portfolio of evidence.

The growing demand for the science and maths teachers in the UAE educational system signifies the goal of preparing the students for the competitive future and gain direct enrolment in the programs related to medical, engineering and natural sciences in the universities nationally and internationally.
