Ideal New Year Resolutions for Improving Children's Behavior and Attitude

What is your New Year resolution?

Is it to eat less and exercise more? Giving up smoking? Thinking of joining a language class?

Many people have several resolutions that are set for the coming year. We try to stick to the decision until the end. The recommendations are for positive purposes that are going to benefit our lives.

What about the children? We ask them to list trivial wishes for New Year that we can afford and buy them.

In the coming year of 2018, why don’t we take a magic twist from the stereotyped materialistic aspirations and look more towards improving the kids’ attitude and behavior throughout the year for their betterment?

Attitude and behavior present one as a gentle and wise person to the world. Let’s make a joint effort with our children to refine their attitudes and behaviors.

• Positive outlook towards life

It is seen that children with negative outlook get poor grades in schools. They tend to be rude and always give up on every work. They do not have friends and are kinds of awkward introverts. In fact, they do not mingle well with the family members also. When asked questions, they give lame excuses for stomach aches, headaches, etc. Therefore, we need to show them that there is a beautiful side of everything in this world. If we think positive and do well, we will get right. We must teach them that negative thoughts will lead to destruction, whereas, hope and optimism will upgrade our lives.

• Set yourself as an example

You are the first and the closest teacher of a child. If your attitude towards life and the surroundings is defeatist, your kid will pursue the same behavioral pattern. The kids are following how you behave in an adverse situation, react to others, treat other humans and animals, etc. You are the mirror of your children. Your positivity is their positivity and vice versa.

• Your children are growing

The kids are passing through the developmental stages. They are experiencing new good and bad things every day that can make them confuse and leads to attitude problems. You have to make sure that your little loves are engrossed in positive plays, and they don’t require making you angry for their deeds.

• Check their peers

Children get influenced by their friends. Ensure that they are making humble and disciplined peers.

• Respect their identity

Personal unique identity comes into the scene when the playgroups steps into the vulnerable period called teenhood. They are fighting for their lookouts, decisions, expectations and finally identity. Your job is to be there for them will lots of attention and respect their viewpoints. Handle with gentle care if they make mistakes.

• Empowerment

No one can promise success. But, if we make our children prepare to be the best by giving their 100%, they can get the choices and possibilities to be empowered. Parents need to tell them to solve problems by giving them suggestions instead of collaborating with them in the activities.

• Challenge the child’s thoughts

Positive thinking and talks influence a child’s behavior and feelings. Everything depends on the current situation. Views condition the moods and etiquettes. Ask them about their reflection on a particular perspective. If they answer negatively, understand the core and challenge it with the specific features.

Let the children come out of their shell and mix with the outer society. Let them play outdoor games with other kids. Take them in singing, dancing or music center. These activities will improve their behaviors as they will learn equity, fairness, brother-sisterhood, discipline, coordination and time management.

• Smile

Your poker face will adversely affect your kids. Enjoy the most valuable relationship with happiness. Include fun and thrills in your daily routines. The harsh environment will make them bitter, whereas, light and jolly surroundings will impose kindness and gentleness on them.

• Set goal

Without a goal, your New Year investment will go into vain. You have to set aims for challenging the behaviors and thoughts of your kids. Instead of making a hodgepodge of several things, concentrate on a single aspect at a time. Select one action and set parameters.

For example, aim for making them complete homework every day.

Don’t set any vague desire like making your child listen to your every word daily.

• Point down their strengths and weaknesses

Focus on their best grabbing method. Some kids learn best through visual presentation, some learn from listening, some learn from writing. Never give them unrealistic expectations that are impossible for them to work out. Notice the initiating point of your kids and progress accordingly.

• Innate motivation

Motivation, activities and interpretation intermix with each other. In case of older children like teenagers, ask them to recognize their negative thoughts that can trigger self-defeatism. Tell them that parents are not going to be with them for the lifetime. So, it’s time to do things on their own instead of relying on the guardians.

Be consistent with your resolution. Regard the kids’ feelings and sentiments.
