International General Certificate of Secondary Education or IGCSE is a subject curriculum based on the English language set by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). It is a two-year course of study. It is recognized by institutions internationally. The course is accepted by more than 140 countries worldwide. The examination has been developed to provide a detailed evaluation of the student's abilities. Preparing for this examination is tough, and students often need an IGCSE study guide.

How many subjects are there on the IGCSE board?

The curriculum offers more than 70 subjects, of which 30 are languages. The subjects are grouped into five groups.

  • Group 1 is Language. It includes primary, secondary, and foreign languages. English is the primary language.
  • Group 2 is Humanities. It includes subjects such as Literature, Economics, History, Environment Studies, and Geography.
  • Group 3 is Mathematics.
  • Group 4 is Sciences.
  • Group 5 is Creative and Vocational subjects. These include Drama, Art, Information Technology, Design, and Physical Education.

Students need to select a minimum of five subjects. They can select up to a maximum of 14 subjects.

How to complete IGCSE high school syllabus effectively?

1. Create a revision timetable

You need to build a realistic timetable that you can accomplish. Start at least 3 months before the examination. Make a list of all the subjects and important topics, especially the difficult ones, and schedule your timetable accordingly. It is better to have monthly, weekly and daily goals. A step-by-step approach is always better than studying everything at the last moment.

2. Have a unique revision style

Everyone has a different tendency to learn, so everyone should have a unique revision style. Create a revision style depending on your preferences. You may study for 3 hours straight or for sessions of 45 mins with a 5 mins break between the sessions. Focus on the essential concepts or study the entire syllabus to get a gist.

3. Practice as much as you can

Study the concepts and practice the papers daily. It will eventually help you cope with the exam pressure and help you retain the concepts. It also makes you familiar with the exam format and structure and helps in increasing your writing speed. Analyze your mistakes and weak concepts, and then solve the papers again. With more practice, you will find yourself more capable of solving the questions and handling the pressure.

4. Prepare notes

Develop a habit of preparing notes while studying in class or at home. Make short notes and summarise lengthy topics. Revisit these notes a few times every day. It will help you to get a gist of all the topics. More importantly, prepare notes that cover the critical aspects of every subject. It will help you to recall the concepts during the examination.

5. A study from multiple sources

Instead of studying from the textbook recommended by your institution, study from other books. Different books have different methods and patterns of explaining concepts. So it is easier to understand a topic from a different book. Studying different books also helps you cover all the topics as some books may skip or give less importance to them.

6. Mind Maps

If you’re facing difficulty memorizing or covering any topic, it is recommended to study using mind maps. Mind maps give you an overview of the topic with headings and by summarising key concepts. It also structures the concept in a logical format, hence making it easier to understand and memorize.

7. A study from a tutor or a coaching institute:

Preparing for such an exam involves more than just studying. It would be best if you had a good study guide for IGCSE. Having the support of a tutor can help you mentally and emotionally. You also get the proper guidance needed to excel in the exam. A tutor can clear your doubts and give you intensive training for the examination.

8. IGCSE Exam Day:

It is D-day; you don’t want to mess it up. Make sure you get enough sleep and wake up early so that you get enough time to prepare. Reach the exam location on time and revise all the topics once.

While solving the assessment, make sure you attend to all the questions. Skip the difficult questions and come back to them later. Every minute counts, so make use of it. After finishing the assessment, run through the paper and check all the answers.
