When selecting a career path, there are a few things you need to consider. The obvious factors in selecting a career would be: is this my dream job? Or: will I make lots of money in this career? While these are important factors to note, there are other elements to consider.

What interests you?

When choosing a career path, the first thing to look at would be what you are interested in. Whatever career you choose, it needs to be able to keep your attention. Maybe there was a particular subject you loved at school, or you have a hobby that you are passionate about. Could this be a possible job opportunity? If you excelled at English in school, look at possible careers in journalism. Or if you enjoy cooking, perhaps becoming a chef is an option.

Narrowing down your interests is the best starting point.

Ask yourself what you want and don’t want from a job

You need first to ask some necessary questions. Do you enjoy working under pressure, or do you prefer working in a more relaxed and flexible environment? You need to know what you want to get out of your job. Some people enjoy the rush of having to meet strict deadlines; others enjoy being able to create their hours. Is job satisfaction or job security more important to you? Some careers may offer less earning potential, yet more flexibility. Others may have a more rigid structure but are stable positions.

By asking yourself the simple question of what you want out of a job, it immediately helps you to narrow down your options.

How would this career fit with your personality and values?

What personality type are you, and what are your work-related values? If you are a sociable person with good communication skills, then the obvious choice would be to work in an environment where you deal with different people. Do you prefer to work alone rather than with others? Maybe you’d be better suited to a job in IT, where you can work alone.

Every career will have its set of values too, and these should line up with your work related values. If the job values efficiency but you are a more creative type who values artistic freedom, then your work values would not line up with those of that particular career.

Do your research

Once you have an idea of a possible career path, do your research on it. What skills or qualifications are needed? Will you need to obtain a degree or diploma to get a job? If so, can you afford to get the necessary skills? What are the typical job duties of someone who works in that position, and would you be able to fulfill this role? The job market is also constantly fluctuating. Make sure that there are employment opportunities in your chosen career path. Find out what your potential earnings will be if you decide on this career.

 

By researching the career path, you will not be met with any surprises years after committing to that path.
