Assistive technology consists of products, equipment, and systems that enhance learning, working, and daily living. They can range from low tech devices to high tech devices depending on the need.
Who does AT support?
Everyone! Assistive technology can support anyone who needs a little extra support in their learning or day to day activities. For example, I coach students who struggle with visual processing and have difficulty reading, to students who struggle with executive functioning skills and need support organizing their creative thoughts while writing. Every person is unique and each assistive technology selection needs to be specific to the learners’ needs.
How can AT support English as a Second Language Learners (i.e. IELTS exam)?
ESL can absolutely benefit from the use of assistive technology tools to advance their language skills, while preparing for the exam. For instance, while working with a student, I would first choose a sample activity from the IELTS exam and then identify which technology would be the best fit. For instance, if we were focused on the reading comprehension portion I would introduce a tool called Read and Write and we would review the functions to help support comprehension using sample comprehension activities. For academic writing, I would introduce a special writing framework that integrates specific AT tools to help with spelling, grammar and punctuation.
What would you tell potential learners looking to use assistive technology tools?
Go for it! What have you got to loose? Most English as a Second Language learners depend on the tools to begin with but as time goes on the supports are less needed. Why not let assistive technology help you reveal your creativity and learning strengths, while building your confidence and overall knowledge. AT tools can make the world of difference!
