Delhi Public School Society Operates Only One School in UAE- Chairman Clarifies

The director of the Delhi Public School (DPS) Society has emphasized his before position that no school in the UAE should convey the brand name 'DPS', aside from foundations that have gained an establishment from the New Delhi-based non-benefit instructive association.

VK Shunglu Padmabhushan, chairman of the DPS Society, said at a Press conference in Dubai on Tuesday: "Our legal position is that the intellectual property name of DPS, any symbols associated with DPS, any acronym or anything suggestive of DPS is the property only of the society registered in India.

"It is not the property of anybody else and our stand is that mere registration (of the name) creates no right."

Shunglu was alluding to two UAE-based schools bearing the famous abbreviation 'DPS' - Delhi Private School, Sharjah, and Delhi Private School, Dubai.

In June a year ago, as Khaleej Times announced, the two DPS Sharjah and DPS Dubai did not reestablish their establishment concurrence with the DPS Society. The two foundations conveyed a round to guardians, asserting that DPS Society, a system of around 220 organizations around the world, was searching for an expansion in its establishment charge.

The two DPS Sharjah and DPS Dubai, set up in January 2000 and February 2002 separately, proceeded with their activities under the enlisted trademark in the UAE as Delhi Private School, and a third school, DPS Ras Al Khaimah, is set to open in April 2020.

In a meeting with Khaleej Times, Shunglu clarified that according to the UAE law, non-government foundations are not permitted to utilize the word 'open'.

"So, with our knowledge and consent we entered into an agreement with the Delhi Private School LLC, Sharjah, for opening DPS Sharjah in January 2000 and DPS Dubai in February 2002," Shunglu said. "But Dinesh Kothari (the managing director Delhi Private School Group) decided not to renew the contract and the agreement expired in March 2017."

This brought about the bringing down of the DPS Sharjah and DPS Dubai from the program of DPS Society-associated schools on its site. Shunglu, in any case, noticed that Kothari still works a school in Jodhpur under an establishment from the DPS Society.
