Sports education and academics are equally important for a student and they actually complement each other. A student who strikes a balance between academics and sports combined has a well-rounded personality and does well in the real world.

Apart from enhancing stamina and endurance, sports teaches a student great deal about team spirit, team work, problem solving skills, negotiation skills, discipline, willpower, confidence, obedience, winning spirit, and coordination and cooperation among team members.

Sports also enable a student to learn valuable life skills and teach them the importance of hard work, never-say-die attitude, and remain balanced in case of a win or a loss.

Sports also help students in their studies as it enhances blood circulation to brain and strengthens the nerve connections. Sports also help in enhanced creativity, improved memory, and enhanced concentration. It has been proven that participating in sports facilitates in the growth of brain. Moreover, when students take part in sports and physical activities, they secrete endorphin, a feel-good hormone that elevates their moods and help them to be more productive in their studies.

However, it is sad that sports are not developing as much as academics and their importance are often overlooked by some parents and teachers.

The present education system focuses more on the academics accomplishments of students and ignores the benefits of sports. Earlier the competition in the education system was not so intense and there was sufficient time for students to take part in various sporting events.

However, the present education system is all about more and more tests, assignments, projects, quizzes, self study, and pretty much a wide range of indoor activities. This takes a huge toll on the students’ physique, making them unfit and obese.

There is an urgent need for the educational system to include outdoors games, sports education, and physical fitness regimen in the curriculum and help the students in developing a well-balanced personality.

Many students also feel reluctant to participate in sports as they feel that sports will sap the energy out of them and leave them exhausted following which they cannot concentrate on their studies. However, many studies have debunked the belief by proving that sports and physical exercise actually provide more energy. As sports and exercise enhance blood circulation to brain and strengthen the nerve connections, the participants’ energy level increases and enable them to accomplish more work than they could have done before.

The main impediment to taking up sports in schools and educational system is the overt emphasis on syllabus by teachers, over expectation by parents, and cut-throat competition among peers to obtain the best grades.

Teachers and parents need to understand that all students are not equal and they have different talents and aspirations. If some students are more inclined to sports than the rest, then they should be encouraged and supported to pursue their favorite sports more seriously. The students who are fond of sports should be assisted in their education and should be offered flexible arrangements both by their teachers and parents.

However, not many are given these facilities due to which their interest and talents in sports do not see the light of the day. This is not only heartbreaking for those students but it later becomes a cause of regret for their parents who blame themselves for killing their children’s dreams and potential.

School administrators and educators need to acknowledge the fact that sports education and physical exercise are as essential as academics. Students are required to be encouraged and incentivized to take up sports in higher numbers and strike a balance between academics and sports and physical education.
