What approach or methodology I use depends on the learners needs and wants. I would do a needs analysis to determine my approach. I strongly believe in the more communicative methodologies as I think a more holistic approach to language learning is preferable. I often use the present, practice and produce method (PPP) as I believe it to be a common sense approach. Lesson should be interactive with a variety of tasks implementing all four skills. I often use video input to raise 'schema' and elicit meaning for students where appropriate and I usually send learners a video link prior to the lesson so they are immersed in the topic and already thinking ahead and can make the most of contact time. With IELTS preparation lessons I usually take a task based approach as exam technique and tips are vital to improve scores in the exam. I also focus on the most common topics for IELTS and encourage students to read and expand vocabulary to better their band. Exam practice can be done both during the lesson and in the students own time and papers/tasks are marked according to public IELTS band descriptors giving the student a clear idea of his/her capabilities of achieving the desired band.
